Care and maintenance of Melocactus – Melon cactus
Aktie
The Melocactus , commonly known as the Melon Cactus, is a unique and striking cactus that gets its name from the round, melon-shaped structure of its body. What makes this cactus special is the cephalium that forms at maturity: a woolly and often reddish crown from which flowers and fruits grow. Caring for this cactus requires a slightly different approach than with other cacti, as the Melocactus is more sensitive to its environment.
The Melocactus naturally grows in warm, tropical areas and therefore thrives best at temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. It absolutely cannot tolerate frost. It is important to place it in a light spot, such as a sunny windowsill. However, provide protection from direct midday sunlight to prevent burning.
When watering, caution is advised. The Melon Cactus likes regular, moderate watering during the growing season (spring and summer). Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In the fall and winter, the cactus has a dormant period and requires less water. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of problems, such as root rot.
The right potting soil is essential for healthy growth. Use a well-draining cactus potting soil that is rich in minerals and contains additives such as sand or perlite. It is also important to choose a pot with drainage holes so that excess water can drain away.
Although the Melocactus grows slowly, it can use some feeding now and then. In spring and summer, use a cactus fertilizer that is rich in potassium and phosphorus but low in nitrogen. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
As for the cephalium, when it forms, it means the cactus is mature. This is a sensitive part of the plant, and it is important not to touch it or get it wet when watering.
