Care and maintenance of Hylocereus undatus – Dragonfruit cactus
Aktie
The Hylocereus undatus , better known as the Dragonfruit Cactus, is not only a beautiful plant, but also the source of the exotic and healthy dragonfruit. This climbing cactus, native to Central and South America, grows naturally on trees and rocks and is loved for its showy flowers and fruits. The Dragonfruit Cactus is a relatively low-maintenance plant that, with the right care, can also flower and produce fruit indoors.
The Dragonfruit Cactus needs a lot of light to grow. Place it in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight, such as a sunny south-facing window. In warm climates it can also be kept outside, but make sure it is protected from extreme heat and frost. Temperatures between 18°C and 30°C are ideal.
Watering is an important aspect of care. Although this cactus can tolerate drought well, it grows best in slightly moist soil. Water as soon as the top layer of the soil feels dry, but avoid allowing the roots to stand in water. During the dormant period in winter, the cactus needs less water.
Use a well-draining cactus potting mix to prevent root rot. You can mix a standard potting soil with sand or perlite for extra drainage. Also make sure the pot has drainage holes.
The Dragonfruit Cactus needs support to grow upright, such as a trellis or a sturdy stake. As it grows, the stems can become heavy, especially when it begins to flower and fruit.
Feeding is essential for healthy growth and fruit production. Use a low nitrogen, high phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in spring and summer to encourage flowering and fruiting. Stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
The flowers of the Hylocereus undatus are spectacular and usually bloom at night. They are large, white and give off a wonderful scent. Dragon fruits can develop after flowering, provided the flowers are pollinated. Indoors, you can do this manually with a brush to transfer pollen from one flower to another.
