Verzorging en onderhoud van de Calathea, de Zebraplant

Care and maintenance of the Calathea, the Zebra plant

The Calathea , often affectionately called the Zebra Plant , is known for its striking leaves with unique patterns and vibrant colors. It is a plant that requires a little more attention than some other houseplants, but which rewards you richly with its beauty. In this blog you will learn how to care for the Calathea in the right way, so that it stays healthy and radiant.

Light and location

The Calathea thrives best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the delicate leaves and cause the colors to fade. A spot near a window with curtains or further away from a window in a well-lit room is ideal. In addition, the Calathea likes a constant temperature between 18-25°C and high humidity.

Watering

The Calathea is a moisture-loving plant, but it is important to avoid overwatering. Keep the soil evenly moist, but let the top layer dry out before watering again. Preferably use filtered or rainwater, because lime in tap water can damage the leaves. In the winter you can reduce the watering somewhat.

Fertilizing and feeding

During the growing season (spring and summer), give the Calathea some liquid houseplant food once a month. This supports growth and enhances the vibrant colours of the leaves. In autumn and winter, the plant does not need any extra food.

Special attention to humidity

Calatheas originate from tropical rainforests and therefore like high humidity. Place a humidifier near the plant or spray the leaves regularly with water. You can also place a bowl of water and pebbles under the pot to create a humid environment.

With the right care, the Calathea will become a striking showpiece in your home that will amaze you time and again with its vibrant leaves.
